Recent years have seen substantial shifts in cultural attitudes towards marijuana for medical and recreational use, but, anyway you look at it, CANNABIS IS BAD. Let&#8217;s see what the Mayo Clinic has to say about marijuana and teenagers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Estimados amigos:<\/p>\n<p>Esta semana he estado tratando con mis alumnos de primero de bachillerato un tema que surgi\u00f3: \u00ab\u00bfDeber\u00eda legalizarse o no el cannabis?.\u00bb En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os se han visto cambios sustanciales en las actitudes culturales hacia la marihuana para uso m\u00e9dico y recreativo pero, lo mires por donde lo mires, EL CANNABIS ES MALO. Veamos qu\u00e9 tiene que decirnos la Cl\u00ednica Mayo sobre la marihuana y los adolescentes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org\/hometown-health\/speaking-of-health\/how-teen-marijuana-use-impacts-brain-development\">https:\/\/www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org\/hometown-health\/speaking-of-health\/how-teen-marijuana-use-impacts-brain-development<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Marijuana is the most common illicit drug among adolescents and young adults. Surveys show fewer of this population now believe marijuana can cause harm. This decline in the perceived risk could lead to increased future use of marijuana. It is important to know that research also shows marijuana use adversely impacts brain development in adolescents and young adults. Marijuana contains more than 500 chemicals, of which <a title=\"Opens in a new window.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/research-reports\/marijuana\/how-does-marijuana-produce-its-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)<\/a> is considered to be the main psychoactive (mind-altering) compound. The concentration of THC in a marijuana product is directly proportional to its potency or how much of a high that product will give when consumed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La marihuana es ls droga ilegal m\u00e1s com\u00fan entre los adolescentes y los adultos j\u00f3venes. Los estudios muestran que un porcentaje cada vez menor de la poblaci\u00f3n piensa que la marihuana puede causar da\u00f1os. In addition, 80 percent of seniors said that marijuana would be easy to get. Estas cifras son motivo de preocupaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HOW MARIJUANA AFFECTS BRAIN DEVELOPMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The adolescent or teen brain continues to mature and develop until around age 25, especially in areas of the brain involved in planning, decision-making and learning, which develop last. This time window is considered a window of vulnerability where any disruption has abnormal and unwanted consequences. <a title=\"Opens in a new window.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/research-reports\/marijuana\/how-does-marijuana-produce-its-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research studies<\/a> have shown that when marijuana is consumed, THC and other compounds enter the bloodstream, reach the brain and attach to naturally occurring receptors called cannabinoid receptors. This causes problems in learning and memory, coordination, reaction time and judgment. It also can cause hallucinations, paranoia and a range of emotional problems. Marijuana use may cause academic difficulties, poor sports performance, impaired driving and troubled relationships.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00bfC\u00d3MO AFECTA LA MARIHUANA AL DESARROLLO CEREBRAL?<\/p>\n<p>El cerebro del adolescente contin\u00faa madurando y desarroll\u00e1ndose hasta la edad de 25 a\u00f1os, especialmente en zonas del cerebro relacionadas con la planificaci\u00f3n, la toma de decisiones y el aprendizaje, que son las \u00faltimas en desarrollarse. Este intervalo de tiempo se considera un intervalo de vulnerabilidad en el que cualquier alteraci\u00f3n tiene consecuencias anormales y no deseadas. The severe form of marijuana abuse is called <a title=\"Opens in a new window.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/marijuana-use-disorder-common-often-untreated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marijuana use disorder<\/a>. Those who start using marijuana at an early age, in high amounts and with risk factors mentioned above, are more prone to developing marijuana use disorder.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No todos los adolescentes o los adultos j\u00f3venes que utilizan marihuana se convierten en adictos, porque cada persona reacciona de un modo diferente. Los efectos de la marihuana en un individuo depender\u00e1 de la concentraci\u00f3n de THC en el producto que contenga marihuana que se utilice, del historial de adicciones en la familia, de la propensi\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica que tenga cada persona a las adicciones, a otras drogas y al alcohol, de las circunstancias del entorno y del historial de enfermedades psiqui\u00e1tricas. If you suspect your child is using marijuana, have an <a title=\"Opens in a new window.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/tween-and-teen-health\/in-depth\/teen-drug-abuse\/art-20045921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open dialogue<\/a> without making negative or angry comments. Offer your child educational material and facts about marijuana and its use. Involve your primary care provider or pediatrician to educate your child and screen for marijuana use so an appropriate referral for addiction treatment can be made.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>LO QUE LOS PADRES NECESITAN SABER<\/p>\n<p>Hablar con sus hijos a una edad temprana sobre los riesgos del consumo de la marihuana y continuar con ese debate a lo largo de los a\u00f1os puede evitar que se consuma por primera vez y proteger el cerebro de sus hijos.
