The International Day of Families is observed<\/a> on the 15 May<\/a> every year. The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 with resolution A\/RES\/47\/237 and reflects the importance the international community<\/a> attaches to families<\/a>. The International Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness<\/a> of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic<\/a> processes affecting families.[1]<\/a><\/sup>[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n

Estimados amigos:<\/p>\n

El D\u00eda Internacional de las Familias se celebra el 15 de mayo de cada a\u00f1o. Esta celebraci\u00f3n se proclam\u00f3 por parte de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en 1993 con la resoluci\u00f3n A\/RES\/47\/237 y refleja la importancia que la comunidad internacional asigna a las familias. Este D\u00eda Internacional proporciona una oportunidad para promover la toma de conciencia sobre asuntos concernientes a las familias y para incrementar el conocimiento de los procesos sociales, econ\u00f3micos y demogr\u00e1ficos que afectan a las familias.<\/p>\n

When thinking about this topic came to my mind the book \u00abMortal y Rosa\u00bb, by Francisco Umbral. This writer from Valladolid made me think about how important families are and about how the love to a son can trascend death and live ever after. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Cuando pens\u00e9 en este t\u00f3pico me vino a la mente el libro \u00abMortal y Rosa\u00bb de Francisco Umbral. Este escritor de Valladolid me hizo reflexionar sobre lo importantes que son las familias y c\u00f3mo el amor a un hijo puede trascender la muerte y vivir para siempre.<\/p>\n

Although Umbral\u00a0 was born in Madrid<\/a>, a city that has inspired most of his work, his early years were spent in Valladolid<\/a>. His mother travelled to Madrid for his birth, because he was an illegitimate child. His mother’s indifference and distance from him marked him with an enduring sadness, as did the infant death of his only son, from which event was born his saddest and most personal book, Mortal y rosa<\/i>, (A Mortal Spring<\/i>). This created in the author a characteristic haughty manner, devoid of hopefulness, absolutely submerged in literature, which has provoked many polemics and enmities. Here is an excerpt from \u00abMortal y Rosa\u00bb that I will try to translate into English.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aunque Umbral naci\u00f3 en Madrid, una ciudad que inspir\u00f3 la mayor parte de su trabajo, sus primeros a\u00f1os los pas\u00f3 en Valladolid. Su madre viaj\u00f3 a Madrid para su nacimiento, porque era un hijo ileg\u00edtimo. La indiferencia de su madre y su distanciamiento hacia \u00e9l le marcaron con una tristeza persistente, al igual que lo hizo la muerte de su \u00fanico hijo, de cuyo acontecimiento naci\u00f3 su libro m\u00e1s triste y m\u00e1s personal, Mortal y Rosa. Esta tristeza cre\u00f3 en el autor unos modales altivos, desprovistos de esperanza, y le sumergieron completamente en la literatura, lo que provoc\u00f3 muchas pol\u00e9micas y le granje\u00f3 muchas enemistades. Aqu\u00ed hay un fragmento de \u00abMortal y Rosa\u00bb que intentar\u00e9 traducir al ingl\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

S\u00f3lo encontr\u00e9 una verdad en la vida, hijo, y eras t\u00fa. S\u00f3lo encontr\u00e9 una verdad en la vida y la he perdido. Vivo de llorarte en la noche con l\u00e1grimas que queman la oscuridad. Soldadito rubio que mandaba en el mundo, te perd\u00ed para siempre. Tus ojos cuajaban el azul del cielo. Tu pelo doraba la calidad del d\u00eda. Lo que queda despu\u00e9s de ti, hijo, es un universo fluctuante, sin consistencia, como dicen que es J\u00fapiter, una vaguedad nauseabunda de veranos e inviernos, una promiscuidad de sol y sexo, de tiempo y muerte, a trav\u00e9s de todo lo cual vago solamente porque desconozco el gesto que hay que hacer para morirse. Si no, har\u00eda ese gesto y nada m\u00e1s.
\nQu\u00e9 est\u00fapida la plenitud del d\u00eda. \u00bfA qui\u00e9n enga\u00f1a este cielo azul, este mediod\u00eda con risas? \u00bfPara qui\u00e9n se ha urdido esta inmensa mentira de meses soleados y campos verdes? \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 este vano rodeo de la muerte por las costas de la primavera? El sol es s\u00f3rdido y el d\u00eda resplandece de puro in\u00fatil, alumbra de puro vac\u00edo, y en el cabeceo del mundo bajo un viento banal s\u00f3lo veo la obcecaci\u00f3n vegetal de la vida, su torpeza de planta ciega. El universo se rige siempre por la persistencia, nunca por la inteligencia. No tiene otra ley que la persistencia. S\u00f3lo el tedio mueve las nubes en el cielo y las olas en el mar.<\/em><\/p>\n

I just found a truth in life, my son, and that truth was you. I just found a truth in life and I have lost it. I try to survive you by mourning you with tears that burn the dark. My little blond soldier who ruled the world, I lost you forever. Your eyes crammed heaven with the blue colour. Your hair goldplated the quality of the day. What remains after you, my beloved son, is a flickering universe, without consistency; the one they Jupiter has. All is a nauseating vagueness of summers and winters, a promiscuity of sun and sex, of time and death, through which I just wander because I do not know what gesture one has to do to die. Other than that, I would do the gesture and that’s it. <\/strong><\/p>\n

How fool noon is? Who can this blue sky trick with laughters? For whom has been such a lie concocted full of sunny months and green fields? Why this vain loitering of death around the coasts of Spring? The sun is sordid and the day shines in its mere uselessness, it shines out of mere emptiness, and in the nodding of the world under a mundane wind I just see a vegetable stubborness, a blinded plant’s clumsiness. The Universe is ruled always by persistence, never by intelligence. There is no other rule than persistence. It is just boredom the one that moves the clouds and the waves in the sea.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And to conclude my post I will also include the song that another father dedicated to his lost son. Sometimes only art (literature, songs) can trascend painful realities, leaving us two marvellous Works of Art like \u00abMortal y Rosa\u00bb and \u00abTears in Heaven.\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n

Y para concluir mi post, incluir\u00e9 la canci\u00f3n que otro padre dedic\u00f3 a su hijo difunto. A veces s\u00f3lo el arte puede (la literatura, las canciones) pueden trascender realidades dolorosas, dej\u00e1ndonos dos maravillosas obras de arte como \u00abMortal y Rosa\u00bb y \u00abL\u00e1grimas en el Cielo\u00bb<\/p>\n
