The Day is the result of a 2010\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/News\/Press\/docs\/2010\/obv853.doc.htm\">initiative<\/a>\u00a0by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/department-global-communications\">Department of Global Communications<\/a>, establishing language days for each of the Organization&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/our-work\/official-languages\">six official languages<\/a>. The purpose of the UN&#8217;s language days is to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official\u00a0languages throughout the Organization.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>El D\u00eda de la Lengua Inglesa en las Naciones Unidas se celebra el 23 de Abril. En esta fecha se conmemora tanto el d\u00eda de nacimiento como de fallecimiento de William Shakespeare.
