They are usually used as gifts on the occasion of <a title=\"Easter\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Easter\">Easter<\/a>. As such, Easter eggs are common during the season of <a title=\"Eastertide\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastertide\">Eastertide<\/a> (Easter season). The oldest tradition is to use dyed and painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs wrapped in coloured <a title=\"Foil (metal)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foil_(metal)\">foil<\/a>, hand-carved wooden eggs, or plastic eggs filled with <a title=\"Confectionery\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Confectionery\">confectionery<\/a> such as <a title=\"Chocolate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chocolate\">chocolate<\/a>.
