This year we have an English Language Assistant who is from the United States and who, thus, is celebrating tomorrow Thanksgiving, which is a national holiday in her country. Traditional foods are a large part of Thanksgiving celebrations. Traditional foods include turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, cornbread, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. Many people serve pie for dessert at the end of the meal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On September, 16th 1620 a group of 102 Separatist (Pilgrims) left England because Kings James did not permit them religious freedom in England. They were to pay back their journey\u2019s debt by sending\u00a0 fish back to England. it took them 66 days to cross the Atlantic ocean on the Mayflower.\u00a0 On November 22nd they arrived in Plymouth Massachusetts.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the pilgrims were not the best fishers and there food storage was running out when they arrived to Plymouth. January 1621, nearly half of the new settlers had died due to lack of shelter, scurvy, and the lack of food.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

To the pilgrims surprise, Squanto ( a native) walked into their site speaking almost perfect English and told them they were building in a village called Pautex, whose residence had all died due to the recent epidemic. He also told them that their chief Massasoit was watching nearby.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In London a merchant taught him English he was set free in 1619 but when he returned to Patuxet land his tribe was gone. Massasoit the Wampanoags Chief was suspicious of Squanto because of his time abroad, but he took him in as a translator for the new comers.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

After years of dealing with the English, Chief Massasoit did not trust the Pilgrims. Edward Winslow was sent to be a hostage and declare his peaceful intentions.The pilgrims and the Massasoit tribe created a peace treaty ensuring mutual protection if attacked by enemies. Satisfied\u00a0 Massasoit brought Edward Winslow back to the village.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The first thanksgiving was said to happen in the fall\u00a0 when\u00a0 pilgrims had a bountiful harvest and a feast was held to celebrate. Massasoit tribe, showed up with 90 of its people and brought deer. For three days the pilgrims and natives ate and entertained each other. The word \u00abthanksgiving\u00bb was not used for this party. Thanksgiving for the Pilgrims was a fasted period giving their thanks to God in prayer.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Squanto recognized his power as the link between the pilgrims and the Massasoit people. He created\u00a0 plan to overthrow the tribe that had took him in. In 1622 Massasoit became aware of Squanto\u2019s plan and asked for his life. The pilgrims could not stop Massasoit because the treaty stated Squanto\u2019s life belonged to the tribe.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Right before Squanto\u2019s execution there was talk about new settlers arriving in what is now called Massachusetts. They were abusing near by locals and were initiating a conspiracy to kill the colonist because of their disagreement with their religion and also to take their resources. Massasoit released Squanto in 1622 to help save the pilgrims and the tribe.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

While the treaty between the pilgrims and the Wamponoags was respected and until Massasoit death, everything worked perfect. However, other settlers were not interested in such alliances. The new settlers believed that natives were wild, savage and godless.\u00a0 If the natives didn\u2019t convert to Christianity and surrender the cultural identity then they had to be eliminated.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
